COVID-19: Media Outrages
In this pandemic, the use of, and access to social media has been both
a blessing and a curse. The novelty of the virus, panic of re-infection, slow pace
of scientific discovery and controlled messages from the CDC’s of different
countries has led to people turning to every/any information they can get on
the virus from social media.
Consequently, we are facing an unprecedented crisis of public
understanding on the subject matter and the reliance on information from social
media is at the heart this. This led to a surge of misinformation during the
outbreak due to rumors, conspiracy theories, politics and other exaggerated
medical claims.
The major media outrages on the pandemic focused on the following:
- Anti-vaccinations;
- Conspiracy theories;
- Government coverage;
- Death-tollisms;
- Social media censorship;
- Social media regulations;
- Predictions of the pandemic’s aftermath;
- Economic recession forecasts; and
- The pace of technology and forced innovations in all sectors of the economy
In the same vein, due to the increasing death tolls, there has
been public outrage on accurate information. This led to increased demands for government
addresses, CDC updates and global communications from the WHO.
For accurate information, I advise we check the following accurate
and verified sources:
- WHO’s situation reports (https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/situation-reports); and
- CDC website for your country. In Nigeria, the NCDC’s situation report can be viewed on (https://covid19.ncdc.gov.ng/) and daily updates posted via the Twitter handle (@NCDCgov).
STAY SAFE and INFORMED!
