Education in Nigeria: An Open Letter To Help The Next Generation

Dear Readers,

Spiraling off from my post on vices, these past two weeks had been spent to help as many foundations that assist survivors or the less privileged survive, get better and secure a better future by settling their hospital bills, family or even their education. In doing this, I came across a tweet on an academic foundation whose major aim is to tackle the failing education system in Nigeria. The Vickies foundation’s contribution might seem like a drop in the ocean to some people, but the basis of some vices that have been occurring in Nigeria is due to the lack of appropriate education.

There was a video of a cleric who claimed the age for consent for the girl child is age 6. This was sad to see, especially because that is the level of exposure they have. This could be as a result of ethnical or religious manipulation, lack of information or proper education. Hence, in the little ways we can, we should help foundations with genuine platforms to reach out, educate, and help Nigeria, especially as a contribution to the next generation. Also, the foundations response to the pandemic is covered in this piece.

Introduction: Vickies Foundation

Vickies Foundation was founded to tackle the issue of failing education due to the lack of access to books and learning materials. Young people quite rightly believe that education is vital for them to prosper in life and further their career potential. This hunger for knowledge in many students motivates them to attend school at all cost. The sad truth, however, is that their parents often cannot afford the books needed for their academic development, and schools also often lack the necessary resources to provide these essential learning. Furthermore, many schools do not even have library facilities, and as a result, many students and young people are not able to reach their potentials in life.

Vickies Foundation steps in, to source and donate books to these schools and educational institutions, enabling them to meet the primary needs of students. The Foundation also creates library spaces from empty classes in schools, with the belief that books are essential and fulfil a variety of needs ranging from academic through to entertainment and relaxation.

Other focus areas of the Foundation are, Career and Skills Development tailored to University Students, graduates, school dropouts and underprivileged youths, among others.

 Our Response to COVID-19

We are working on helping one of the most affected groups in Nigeria during this pandemic, which are JSS3 and SS3 students. These students are supposed to be writing their Basic Education Certificate Examination to enable JSS3 students move to high school, and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination to enable SS3 Students graduate from high school and make their way to universities.

We provide Online Tutorial Classes for them according to their Exam approved syllabi, and these tutorials can be found on our YouTube channel. Taught subjects range from Mathematics, English, Basic Science, Civil Education, Social Studies, Physics, Chemistry, Further Mathematics, Government, Literature-in-English, Economics, Geography, Accounting and many more.

Furthermore, in delivering excellence we have partnered with Le-Vic Foundation, Ghana to reach out to Ghanaian students as well because there’s One West Africa, One Exam! All our WAEC tutorial videos can be found on our YouTube Channel. Also, foreign Scholarship updates for MScs and PhDs will be posted on our pages soon. Please visit our website to know more about us, and check our social media pages to get updates on our upcoming programs.
